Knees are a funny joint… I recently sprained mine and this is what I learned! Every part of the body is connected. I know it’s hard to think about your heel striking the ground and the effect it has on your low back, but it’s connected. Knee discomfort and pain can be caused by a lot of things. One of which is a weak gluteus medius. It’s a powerful muscles that is responsible for maintaining a single-leg stance (like walking or running when one foot leaves the ground).
So to strengthen it, try some one legged squats! To do this squat correctly: stand on one leg, hips lower and push back first (bend at your waist), chest comes forwards, and your knee will bend on its own. Keep your knee facing forwards (don’t let it splay in or out!), as you power back up you should feel this towards the outer and upper part of the gluteal region.
Tip: Keep your hips level as well, so what should you do? Engage your core! Happy squatting.
